ADVICE ON ADJUSTING INSULIN AND CARBS FOR EXERCISE


Short term or gentle exercise less than 30 mins

Insulin
Carbohydrate

No adjustment

 

Have Hypo treatment with you

  
Medium term / gentle exercise  30 – 45 mins
InsulinCarbohydrate

No adjustment or minimal to 20% reduction prior to/during exercise

 

Additional 1 –2 CPs (depending on BG levels)

Have hypo treatment with you

 

  
Prolonged or Intense exercise  up to 4 hrs
InsulinCarbohydrate

30% - 50% reduction prior to/during exercise

 

Additional CPs during exercise eg 2-3 CPs per hour

Have hypo treatment with you

Additional CPs following exercise

 

  
Prolonged exercise  greater than 4 hours
Insulin Carbohydrate

50% reduction prior to/during exercise

30%-50% reduction following exercise

10%-20% reduction for up to 24 hrs afterwards

Additional CPs during exercise eg 2-3 CPs per hour

Have hypo treatment with you
