Hi Guy
I'd be happy-ish with 10 or less (happier than 12 certainly), though I think the guidelines are 9 for T1s and 8.5 for T2s by 2 hours after meals. I know too that many forum members set (and achieve) more like non-diabetic ranges for themselves.
The learning curve is steep. Maybe give yourself a little slack now and aim to tighten as you go along. M
PS Caffeine does not have much of an affect on my BGs, though I read something about very high doses helping to prevent T1s going hypo during exercise so I guess as with everything... 'your diabetes may vary'. |

Yes Daniel, that's the unique thing to remember as I tolerate apples with no spikes or high bg at all, same goes for pears too. It's just a test and see experiment. |

| With the apple thing. I also find I cannot eat them anymore! I love granny smiths but i rise about 8 points 2 hours after one and that's with insulin!! Normal size apple has about 15g carbs so not HIGH but as you will learn some things will affect you different to how they affect other people. It's a learning game finding out why will affect you and what won't. |

Hope you get a positive response Lozzark. Do keep us posted.
For my own little 'no carb counting here, sorry!' bugbear I am writing an open letter to Diabetes UK which I will post on our blog and send to DUK, possibly a newspaper or two, and the Secretary of State for Health (or whatever the MP notionally in charge of the NHS is called).
Vive la revolution! M |

Ziggy, maybe when you went out, you dropped very quickly from the 7.9 which then triggered a small dump?
I've taken advantage of the darker evenings to start running again (I don't like running when there's a lot of people around to see me). I had started cycling in preference to running as I had found running in the mornings made my BG soar, whereas cycling makes it drop.
Was 8.8 last night an hour after dinner, then went out and jogged 2 miles in 30 minutes and was 5.5 when I got back. I think if I was under 7 when I started out, I would have a biscuit beforehand to hopefully prevent liver dumps. |

Awe, I'm sorry to hear that Clare!...... it can't be easy having two so young But we all think you do a great job! Was out with one of my friends last night who has a 5 year old and 3 year old - she said that it's the hardest job in the world, but the most rewarding one too! It is all really daunting, but your right, I guess we all just have to get on with it and do our bests, that all any of us can do, right!? Sending you some ((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))
P.S good about the car! x |

Just a thought - I scared myself witless on hols when I tested and got very (unusually) high reading. I then remembered I'd just been preparing pineapple for dinner and had possibly got juice all over my fingers and had not washed my hands before testing. A handwash and retest showed exactly that - it was mostly pineapple juice giving the high reading.
Easy done, particularly when you've just started testing. |

There are lots of interesting ways around the country of setting up what are often called "user-involvement" groups or networks. Some work very well and some do not. Some of the best are not set up "through official channels".
However, the learning that comes from these does not often influence the "official guidance" for health professioals or NHS etc because it is not counted as scientific evidence. Some of us have been involved in getting what people think to be useable as well for many years, and in some areas good progress has been made. The Dept of Health have used some of my work for example as "Good Practice" guidance recently - and that was a report on what people had said and exp...

| A high 1hr post-meal reading has a unique power to get me off my bum and out for an extra walk round the lanes. This can only be a good thing. Wish it wouldn't get dark so early. |

| Re unwroughtling - Mad Men certainly didn't do it ! I've come to it too late. The 60s detail is great but I'm just not getting the story. Is there a story ? Maybe it's not my turn with the brain cells. |

my opticlik pen has never given me any problems since i have been on insulin about 6 years, i have just had to replace it with a new one due to the battery running out. i was advised to use it due to the large amount of insulin i was on as it was the only pen available at the time that could administer the dose in just two injections. reading up on the literature, the new 'clik' pen does exactly the same as the old one cept the old digital readout has been replaced by a dial with standard numbers on it. lets face it, these companies have to be seen to be doing research and surveys to pacify the millions of diabetics worldwide. after all what would they do with all that money they make? you can only drive one BMW/Mercede...

really caffine effects you - I didnt know that could be a factor as well - I am having a coffee with a sweetner in the morning as well. What kind of effect does it have on you ?
In repsonse to the idea about gettinga dog - its a good one but I live in a flat and there not allowed. Its not a problem my Wife is on metformin for a non dibetic related issue and she has so much energy now she is kicking me to the swimming pool a couple of times a week.
Thanks Guy
UPDATE - tested today using blueberrys and porridge = 12.3 2 hours after - still high but better than before, should I be aiming for 10 or less as acceptable food spike in the morning ? or...

| No. Being veggie the haddock is a no-go. Being diabolic the chips are a no go. Waterfoot is a bit off the stomping ground of my youth and teenage years - basically Inishowen via Derry round the north coast to about Ballycastle but centred on bthe Porttstewart-Portrush area. I'm incredibly out of touch anyway. I bet even the Harbour Bar in Portrush has changed beyond recognition. And that is sad. |

Incidentally, having grown up on the north coast of Norn Iron and knowing this highly salted and rubbery delicacy as dulse, (pronounced dulce) I was later to encounter those sophisticated townies in Belfast pronounce it as dullis. Wonder how they pronounce it in Fermanagh? PS It's disgusting.
We go for long drives around the north coast nearly every weekend and my OH eats tons of the stuff and yip being Belfast born n bred he calls it dullis.
Ever had the battered haddock from Stevie's chippy in Waterfoot Terry? I don't like fish and never ever eat the stuff but have recently started to crave it hence the weekly tips up north. The batter is so delicious I re...

I'll do a bit of homework on the Manchester Bus School study Terry. There is some good stuff out there but unfortunately discounted by people like NICE when they do their review of research evidence because it listens to people rather than treats them as "things for study".
Interestingly, Croydon PCT, with which I have a small representative role, was genuinely interested in how a virtual community such as a forum could help local diabetics provide feedback on services that would help inform decision making. Debbie Keeling was really helpful and came down from Manchester to talk to the Diabetes Network Board.
I think the general view arising from the meeting was that something offi...

The meters can make you paranoid.
Hi Retinal Scanning
My diabetic nursie tried that old chestnut with me when I was first diagnosed. They tell you that so you don't cost them a fortune by actually requesting prescriptions for strips from them. Without my meter I would never have discovered that if I don't eat breakfast within 10 mins of waking then my BG levels keep rising until lunchtime and that I can't tolerate caffeine in any shape or form. These are just a couple of things that I discovered by using my meter and it is totally worth the personal expense to myself.
I agree with you about the dog walking keeping you fit, the only problem is my 10 yr old Staffie won't ...

Hi retinal scanning, I am afraid I do disagree with you. My hba1c is yearly and currently behind because the surgery is behind in their nurse appointments and when I queried it I wasa told I just have to wait. Approx 2 months ago I went to see GP about something else and she asked how my BG was. I showed her my diary and she straight away said they were two high and started me on an additional medication. No mention of a1c she was happy to use the readings I had recorded in my own diary. Hba1c does not demonstarte how a food or meal has affected you at best it is an average of 120 days ie the life span of a red blood cell. BG readings can be useful and do have a place particularly as every one of us is different and react differently t...

| I'm lucky I've never had a hypo but I still need to treat myself now and again or I'd go mad. |

|
| Yes probably Cazirv. I am beginning to hate biscuits. In any case if you are Hypo you don't even taste them. You are just shoving fodder in. I really wish I could enjoy hypo remedies! |

| When your BG is over 14 you may want to test for ketones even though you are type 2. Last week when my BG were very high due to insulin delivery problems, I was making ketones for the first time in my "D" life. Be careful with the high BG and do take care of yourself. Best wishes at the ENT casualty in the morning. |

| Is it twisted to be jealous of T1s and your sneaky little hypos that you get to "cure" with delicious treats?? |

| I am sorry I laughed! It's not funny... I went OTT on Jelly beans due to hypo today |

I would LOVE a diabetic boot camp. I'm struggling to control my carb cravings at the mo and have constant lapses when the lure of Jelly Babies and Twirls just gets too much for me. To be given the correct food, made to exercise and be educated for a whole week would definitely help get me back on track. You'd have to hold it in the middle of nowhere, well away from sweetie shops or at least have a 12 ft fence to keep me in. |

Everyone has there own view and i always say in my opinion i do not force what i do or how i do it on anyone . My diabetic nurse is very happy .
Some people ask what i eat etc.... i just read the packaging and choose what i eat just common sense
Has it occurred to you that some of us don't eat pre-prepared foods? I never do, I cook from scratch and I find Collins Little Gem Calorie counter brilliant for calculating the carbs in raw ingredients.
FWIW this works for me since my Hba1c at it's highest has been 5.7 in the 6+ years I have used the basic "test test test" ethos. |
