Has anybody used Freekeh? I saw it used in a salad on an Australian TV show, hadn't heard of it, checked it out, seems to be low GI, and most of the carbs seem to be indisgestable.

If you have used it, where did you buy it and is it nice? (meant to be like barley)

Never heard of it. So I looked it up and found this commercial site:

http://www.greenwheatfreekeh.com.au/about.php

Could be interesting.

Most things I found about it seem to be on Australian sites, I guess as it is the home of GI, it has taken Freekeh to its bosom. Come to think of it, the show I saw it on was an Australian show called Good Chef, Bad Chef - my daughter was watching it my ears pricked up at the praise they lavished on the feekeh.  Can't find any online suppliers in the UK - plus I so much don't want to pay P&P on a grain!

May get to our local supermarkets in a year or two.

In the same programme (in fact the same recipe) they mentioned and extolled umeboshi vinegar and claimed numerous health benefits for it.

Zig

I see it's even made its way into Jamie Oliver's recipes (from a Google) so may not be impossible to get.

One shop listed as having "freekeh, a roasted young green wheat" is in Kentish Town in a Mediterranean food hall. I'll have a look in my local Cypriot supermarket and see if it's there.

Yes - I agree - it looks very interesting indeed.

I'd certainly want to give it a go if anyone can find a UK source.

I've been told that freekeh can be bought at this food hall on Kentish Town Road, London:

http://www.phoeniciafoodhall.co.uk/index.jsp

They do a home delivery service for £4.50 - free for orders over £100.

Hmmm perhaps I should have it shipped to Cornwall by the cwt!  Sir Ziglaw could row over from Ireland in his coracle and pick up a weekly supply!

Sorry, that's too just my SOH Wallycorker!

90 mile overlander to the coast Your High-ness, but am a lot fitter and the coracle is light so should be OK. Otherwise down the canal system and round the bottom of Ireland instead. Blooming stuff would need to be worth it LOL

Well if the coracle doesn't weigh much perhaps you could fly over with it as hand luggage?  I'm sure it would be fine fine fine on RyanAir!!!!!

I think that comment was coracle-ist as it infers one should not take them seriously.

They are a minority group you know, although there probably are still a lot more coracles than there are Severn trows.

Thank goodness for that, you don't want to be meeting too many Severn trows on a dark night in the Bristol Channel!
